Ralph Bresler, chair,
a graduate of Miami of Ohio (degree in business administration) and Virginia
Law School, entered the Foreign Service in 1968. He had tours in Belgium,
Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Kuwait, and Congo, and served in the bureaus of
African, European, Near Eastern, and International Organization Affairs at
the Department of State. In 1992 he was charge d’affaires at the newly
opened embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan for several weeks. Before his
retirement in 1999, Ralph’s last two positions were director of the office
responsible for U.S. participation in the agricultural and development
organizations in the UN system and director of the office dealing with
economic issues in Africa.
Stan Gorrell,
chairman of the
James City County Electoral Board, was a career military officer. In
retirement, he is now a business organizational and applications management
consultant in the James City/Williamsburg/York County area. After graduating
from St. Mary's University of Texas, with a degree in business commerce, he
served in Army command and staff positions of increasing responsibility
throughout his military career with assignments in Iran, Germany, Korea, and
Vietnam. Receiving his master of business administration degree, he then
managed a number of subsidiary corporations for the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Resolution Trust Corporation. A
resident of the Mews at Williamsburg since 1998, he has served as president of the Mews' Homeowners Association. He
also has been
active in the
James City County Neighborhood Connections organization. Stan is married
to
Frankie Gorrell, an activist in civil and environmental
matters, and a member of the
Historic Triangle Democratic Women’s Group
(HTDWG). Their children have global addresses from the District
of Columbia and Texas to London and Australia.
Mike Halpin , former
chair of the James City County Democratic Committee, has lived in the county since 1961. He
graduated from Lafayette High School in 1975. He attended Ferrum Junior College and Virginia Tech. He worked
for Anheuser-Busch for 21 years and served as shop steward in
day shift brewing for Teamsters Local 95 before becoming a self-employed
political consultant. He founded the
Three River Democratic
Activists and serves as its facilitator. He has served as
a vice chair for the Virginia Association of Democratic
Chairs (VADC), 3rd Senatorial District Democratic
chairman, and 97th House District legislative Democratic
chairman. His wife, Melanie, is employed by the JCC
schools as a computer service technician. His daughter,
Katherine, attended Jamestown High School.
Lynne Helmick organized
and has chaired the
Historic Triangle Democratic Women’s Group
(HTDWG). The group was formed in the fall of 1999 to provide women from
James City County, Williamsburg, and upper York County an opportunity to
gather in a social and educational setting and to promote Democratic ideals
in the greater Williamsburg area. Lynne has been a member of the James City
County Democratic Committee for about seven years. She is employed by the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Her husband, Roger, is a teacher with the
Williamsburg-James City
County Public Schools. They have two children.
Jim
Icenhour
is a retired Delta Air Lines Captain and a retired Air Force
fighter pilot. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and he
earned a graduate degree in business administration from the University of
Utah while serving in the Air Force. He flew 195 combat missions in the
Vietnam War and twice won the Distinguished Flying Cross. He supervised the
launch in England of the U.S. raid on Libya in 1986.
Jim served on the Board of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy
and as a member of the Ford’s Colony Homeowners Association Strategic
Planning Committee. In 2005 he was appointed by Governor Mark Warner to the
State Water Commission. In 2001 Jim narrowly lost his race for the Powhatan
District seat on James City County Board of Supervisors, but he came back to
win in 2005 with 61% of the vote.
Jim and his wife, the former Linda M. Fisher, have lived on
the Virginia Peninsula since 1987 and in James City County since 1994. They
have two daughters: Cheryl, an Air Force major, and Cynthia, a Newport News
school teacher and resident of Williamsburg.
John McGlennon is
a New York native. He has been a Williamsburg area resident for more than 26
years and a resident of James City County since 1987. In 1974, he joined the
College of William and Mary's government department and is currently
chairman. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science at Fordham
University and received fellowships to Johns Hopkins University, where he
earned both a master's and a doctoral degree in political science. Professionally, he has served as president of the William & Mary Faculty
Assembly, chaired numerous committees, and served six years as a faculty
representative on the College's Advisory Budget Committee. He has been
selected three times by graduating classes as an honorary marshal and
recognized nationally for his advising, as well as having been selected the
College Freshman Advisor of the Year. For the community, McGlennon's
activities have included service on the Child Caring Connection board of
directors, membership on the steering committee of Citizens for Better
Schools, and chairmanship of the
James City County Board of Supervisors. As a volunteer, he has worked
with the United Way and the American Heart Association. McGlennon and
his wife, Terry, have two sons.
Donald Moffitt,
corresponding secretary and webmaster, is a retired financial journalist who
settled in James City County in 1999. Born and raised in Texas, he
founded his high school's Stevenson-for-President club in 1952, was
graduated from Yale University, and has lived and worked in California, New
York, and Connecticut. In retirement he held jobs at the New York
Stock Exchange and at Reuters Analytics Group (software development) in
Stamford, CT, and helped manage a Democratic state assembly campaign.
His wife, Ellen Graham, is a free-lance writer and editor. Their
daughter, Julia, a graduate of Tufts University/School of the Museum
of Fine Arts in Boston, lives and works as a fitness trainer in Key West,
Florida.
