Houston's
Smog:
Perhaps the worst in the nation, it has killed many
hundreds of residents since former Governor Duhbya gave
industrial poisoners and invincibly ignorant motorists
free rein to pollute the skies, the earth, and the waters
on the face of it. So sue? No way. Duhbya steamrolled
legislation to give big corporations virtual immunity
from civil and criminal wrongdoing - a license to kill
for profit. So much for shouldering
"responsibility." The great conservationist
Teddy Roosevelt must be shrieking in his grave over the
perversion of his Republican Party.
The decision of Duhbya's
"administration" to strike a blow for healthy
air has been rescinded in the interest of keeping
polluters and invincibly ignorant right-wingers happy. -- March
14, 2001.
From the New York Times, March 10,
2001:
The Bush administraton, some influential Republicans in
Congress and several big owners of coal-burning power
plants have joined in advocating something long sought by
environmental groups and Democrats: cuts in the plants'
emissions of carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping greenhouse
gas widely thought to contribute to a global warming
trend...But the prospect has spawned a fierce lobbying
effort by conservative Republicans and some coal, oil and
industry groups, which are urging Mr. Bush to abandon his
campaign stance and any mention of carbon dioxide.
