…by Publius

A recent series of letters to the Daily Press motivated Publius to vent in this anti – NRA letter.  We welcome opposing views or opinions on any topic for future editions.  Send your opinion on any federal, state or local issue to whyte17@home.com and we will try to publish it in our anonymous column. Publius was the pen name used by the authors of the Federalist Papers.

Some readers urging reasonable gun control have caused the NRA legions to slither out from under their rocks. Their anti gun control arguments are unpersuasive. They actually believe that a family is safer with a gun in their home. Some of them argue the society would be safer if everyone were armed. They pretend that reasonable gun control will result in mass confiscation of firearms. They rant about the Federal Government and think an armed citizenry can defeat the US Military should it become tyrannical  When thoughtful people talk about how the mere proximity of guns has an effect on the accident and suicide rates, the NRA robots are conditioned like Pavlov’s Dogs to rant about getting tough on crime.  They remind us that any new gun control law was first used by Hitler.

They lie about the meaning of the Constitution. None of their pseudo lawyers can name a Supreme Court precedent where the Second Amendment gives private citizens the right to own unregulated firearms. They ignore the “well regulated militia” clause. They make the ridiculous claim we already have enough gun laws but when the FBI enforces Federal seizes illegal weapons, the NRA law and calls them Nazis. Of course, everyone has a right to self do it defense but there are better ways to than turn a home into an arsenal. People occasionally prevent crime with firearms, but not as often as the NRA propaganda claims. A household is much more likely to become the target of a burglary if it is common knowledge that guns are present. Accidents and injuries are much more common than repelling an intruder with a weapon. The NRA shows no sympathy for the victims of accidents or suicides or crimes of passion where arms intended for self defense were used to kill and maim. They refuse to believe that government actions can help save lives.

This despicable group lobbied against the assault weapons ban. They blocked the bill on cop killer bullets. They watered down the “Brady Law.”  They threw a hissy fit over Virginia’s “one gun a month law.”  They just killed the “Gun Buyback Program.”  They oppose any bill requiring registration of firearms, or licenses or data  collection. In the beginning, they even opposed Richmond’s ”Operation Exile,” but when the gun program began to work, the NRA flip flopped and pretended it was their idea. They reek with hypocrisy.

Their PACs raise millions of dollars from mass propaganda campaigns then spend the money to smear any candidate who disagrees with them. In the election cycle, brave candidates become sniveling wimps rather than face their wrath. They throw money at those politicians who kowtow to their will.  Should one stand up to the NRA, they are branded as “naïve” or “socialist”...  or even worse...  (gasp)...  liberal.

George Bush(s), Jim Gilmore, Jo Ann Davis and Mark Early may be in Charleton Heston’s pocket, but not all of us are fooled.  Millions of Virginians believe our position on gun control is moderate and reasonable. The NRA has no idea what those words mean.
