Text Box: From the Chair…
Fellow Democrats:
Barbara and I would like to invite you to our home Sunday, December 8 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a holiday cocktail buffet. It would be appreciated if you could bring an hors d’oeuvre or dessert. Please call Barbara at 564-8702 to let us know what you’d like to bring for a good balance. The Breslers and Moffitts will provide beverages. We look forward to celebrating the holiday season with you.
Directions: We live at 3028 John Vaughan Rd in Governor’s Land. Proceed west on Rte 5 past the new Monticello Rd extension. Governor’s Land is the first entrance on the left. Proceed past the guardhouse (you need not stop) to the stop sign. Turn left on Two Rivers Road, and then take the second left on Planters Round. Take the next left, John Vaughan Road. We are in the cul de sac at the end of the street at number 3028. Please park head in to accommodate more cars.
I hope you will join me in voting yes on all five issues on the ballot November 5. The two constitutional amendments are straightforward and designed to improve the work of our courts and the legislature. The two bond issues will provide $900 million for capital improvements in higher education and $119 million for our parks.
The contentious item is the Hampton Roads Transportation Referendum. It is easy to quibble with the referendum — should have been handled by the legislature, not enough for public transportation, other ways it could be financed such as tolls or an increase in the gasoline tax. But the fact is we need to start now to build new highways or we will soon face gridlock similar to what prevails in the Washington D.C. area. If the referendum is rejected it will prove very hard to raise taxes for any purpose in the future. The Gilmore wing of the Republican Party will have won a major victory in their campaign to progressively starve the state government of resources needed to provide even the most basic functions including transportation.
We will not be having a committee meeting in November or December because of the holidays; our next meeting will be January 16 at 7 at the Human Services Building on Olde Towne Road. I hope you can join us then.
Best regards,
Ralph Bresler
