My Fellow Democrats:

I am looking for a few good men and women. We have a fantastic statewide ticket running for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. Now I need point people willing to become the committee's liaison with each campaign. Please respond to me at (757) 253-6463 or e-mail mhalpin@erols.com ASAP so I can set each individual up with the proper person as requested by each campaign.

At our July 26 meeting we will consider creating a Second Vice Chair. This position will be in charge of precinct organization. The liaison people would work through him or her. Our first vice-chair, currently Ford Anderson, is doing an excellent job supporting the chair in the day-to-day operation of the committee and fulfilling various assignments and obligations in this busy campaign season.

I hope all of you agree that since the Republican Veg-O-Matic redistricting "ferrymandered" James City County, we must change as change occurs to win. The proper notice and call to by-law revision will be given to the committee via e-mail alert and newsletter.

I would like to thank all of the folks in attendance at the Flag Day Picnic. It is great to see so many new faces. We would like to be able to sponsor a few ads, "meet and greets," and fund-raisers this campaign season. Our committee must pay state dues, purchase software for the registered voters' list (GOTV), and be able to compete and win. Please make a contribution of $100.00, $50.00, or $20.00 to your local committee.

I remember, one year in my youth, attending Nature Camp in Vesuvius, VA. It was a two-week camp, and on the middle weekend there was a special outing. The camp was split into four groups and each had a special place to go. Some went to Crabtree Falls, camping on McClung Mountain, tubing at Goshen Pass, or rock-hopping up Big Mary's Creek to the South River. One year I "earned" the overnight camping on McClung Mountain. As we foraged for dry wood to burn at the bonfire I came upon a half-rotted tree begging to be kicked over. Having studied with the Shao Lin priests of TV Kung Fu. I proceeded to remove the tree from its resting place. I had not noticed the humming sound at the base of the tree until it was too late. Yellow jacket City.

Slow motion replays in my mind....I hit the tree with my graceful kick, breaking off a large piece at the top. It hit my head and knocked me cold. The yellow jackets made a bee line for the camp, leaving me lying there motionless. Coming to my senses, I made for the cover of the nearby stream ready to jump in to the nearest trout pool.

Although their were a few stings in camp, there were lessons learned. That buzzing sound you hear out there now are some angry Republicans. The doofus in the woods this year was Gilmore. We can put Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Don McEachin, Bill Barlow, Patrick Pettitt, John McGlennon, and Jim Icenhour in office this year with hard work, contributions, and more hard work. Please give to your local committee with time and resources.
