Text Box: From the Chair…
Fellow Democrats:
I think most of you are aware from the Daily Press coverage of the shameful role Senator Tommy Norment played in leading the mob which lynched Judge Askew in Newport News. If you would like to let him know what you think please join me in sending him an e-mail at district3@widomaker.com.

As a newcomer to the area I had thought Norment was one of the better Republicans in Virginia because of his courage in standing up to Gilmore on the car tax cut. But as John McGlennon pointed out at our last meeting, he now wants to further starve the state of revenue by eliminating the estate tax. Not much of a moderate Republican there now, maybe there never was one.

Debbie Schneider, Cookie Heard, Mike Halpin and I represented the committee at an all day meeting in Fredericksburg to develop a strategic plan to reinvigorate Democratic efforts in the First Congressional District. We made good progress; Debbie will give you a report at our next meeting.

Speaking of our next meeting, it will be Thursday, February 27 at 7; Daily Press editorial writer and Washington Post columnist Gordon Morse will address us. The Press covers local news very well. Without their staying on the story the Republicans could easily have gotten rid of Judge Askew with little publicity and the general public thinking that she probably deserved to be booted from the bench. Please invite a friend to come and listen to what promises to be a very interesting presentation. Bill O’Donovan, editor of the Virginia Gazette, will be our speaker at our March 27 meeting.

Finally, I’d like to ask that you consider making a contribution to Philip Forgit, who has formed an exploratory committee to run against Melanie Rapp this fall for delegate for the 96th district. With our help he can mount a serious challenge to Rapp. Please consider contributing by sending a check to Forgit for Delegate and mailing it to P.O. Box 5604, Williamsburg, VA 23188. - Ralph Bresler
