Text Box: From the Chair… Fellow Democrats: We are very pleased that U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott will be the speaker at our banquet Sunday, April 27. As you know, Bobby is a rare Congressman willing to speak the truth even when emotions are raging in the other direction. Examples include his insistence on discouraging crime with means more effective than building more prisons, his willingness to speak out against John Ashcroft's subversion of our civil liberties after 9/11, and more recently his questioning whether the invasion of Iraq will serve our national interest. Those of us who attended the York County banquet last year know that he is a thought-provoking speaker. Tickets for the dinner are $45 for a single, and $85 for a couple. To be a sponsor costs $150 (three tickets), and a patron $400 (table of ten). Patrons and sponsors will be recognized, and patrons will have reserved tables. Checks should be written to JCC Democrats and mailed to JCC Democratic Committee, P.O. Box 2032, Williamsburg, VA 23187-3032. The banquet takes place at the Radisson Fort Magruder which is located on U.S. 60 east of Williamsburg, less than a mile west of the intersection with Rte 199. A reception with cash bar begins at 5:30 p.m, and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Marilyn Perlman is working with the Radisson as chair of the banquet committee. Please phone Marilyn at 221-7270 if you can help on the committee. Please make every effort to attend, and please encourage your friends and neighbors to join us, too. Last year’s successful banquet attracted 125 people. In today’s even more parlous times, when the voices of humanity and reason are needed more than never before, we should be able to top that number. Finally, a reminder to committee members. July 25: Annual dinner York County Democratic Committee, with Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine as speaker and guest of honor.
